"Rumpus Room" -- it's so 50's. First, this type of space was called a "Den", then a "Rumpus Room", and now a "Family Room." Our Argentine friends call this space the "Sitting." We have to wonder, at a time when (most) living rooms are "museums" and "Family Rooms" are rarely occupied by an entire family, "What's a 'Family Room' now?" We grew up in a house that had none -- our "Family Room" was our "Living Room" -- albeit a 20' x 49' space, with three walls of windows, a walk-in hand thrown brick fireplace, "Dutch Doors", bay windows, rough hewn beam ceilings and pegged floors. It was filled with comfortable furniture, extraordinary antiques and art, yet was, above all... approachable. We were a family there. Our clients wanted a space to retreat from the world of..."things." We obliged and there isn't a Labrador Retriever un-friendly spot -- anywhere. |
