We transformed a dark, claustrophobic space into this inviting family room. First to go: the dark brown exposed brick fireplace and windowless wall, then tile floors gave way to bleached hardwood. Next we cranked up the volume with low voltage recessed lighting, a wonderful shield in crusty white over the fireplace hearth, edited accessories, and a fresh palette of green, blue and yellow.
Now, herringbone patterned maize colored linen curtains drop 26 feet from ceiling to floor, simple framed new windows open onto awesome garden views. Sisal area rugs and richly textured fabrics keep this room casual - as well as practical. The sofas (yes, they are white) were remade and reupholstered by a master craftsman. The fabric is up to the task of everyday spills and mishaps that occur in an active family - a testament to the fact that light colors show dirt less than dark ones (and the power of modern day soil- and stain-resistant fabrics). |
